How does a yo-yo champion end up inspiring the CEO of Louis Vuitton to create a one-of-a-kind luxury yo-yo? It all started with a jaw-dropping performance on the boutique floor in Manila, and what happened next is a story of talent, serendipity, and a moment that changed everything.

In December 2011, a moment of pure serendipity unfolded in Manila, Philippines.. one that would forever change the trajectory of Ernest Kahn’s career.

At the time, Ernest was not only a two-time Philippine National Yo-Yo Champion but also a rising star in the world of professional yo-yoing. By day, he worked as a Sales Associate at the Louis Vuitton boutique in Makati, blending his passion for performance with the luxury retail world.

As fate would have it, Yves Carcelle, then-CEO of Louis Vuitton, was visiting the Philippines for a private cocktail event in his honor. Word quickly spread that Carcelle would be stopping by the boutique, and the staff, well aware of Ernest’s extraordinary talent, urged him to perform a yo-yo demonstration for the esteemed executive.

With no time to prepare, Ernest suited up, stepped onto the boutique floor, and delivered a performance that could only be described as world-class. Sleek precision, jaw-dropping string tricks, and effortless flair came together in a masterclass of modern yo-yo artistry.

Carcelle was mesmerized.

He applauded, smiled, and, to everyone’s astonishment, declared, “I’ll help him!”

What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

Not only did Yves Carcelle take a photo with Ernest to commemorate the moment, but he also made a personal promise: Louis Vuitton would create a one-of-a-kind, luxury yo-yo just for him.

Months later, that promise became a reality.

Crafted with a stunning palladium coat and finished in Louis Vuitton’s signature Damier Graphite pattern, the custom yo-yo was a masterpiece of French craftsmanship. Designed in collaboration with Perrine Desmons, it was the first of its kind.. a collector’s piece that celebrated both Ernest’s talent and the Maison’s legacy of innovation.

The story became even more poetic when an unexpected historical connection surfaced: in the 1920s, when the yo-yo was first introduced in France, Louis Vuitton’s Champs-Élysées location hosted yo-yo exhibitions in its store windows. Ernest’s performance was, in a way, a modern echo of this century-old tradition.. a full-circle moment that bridged the past and present.

But the story didn’t end there.

Just a week after the buzz surrounding this event began to circulate, Ernest secured a sponsorship with Caribou Lodge (CLYW), one of the most prestigious yo-yo companies in the world. The Louis Vuitton moment didn’t just elevate his craft.. it launched him into the global spotlight.

From the boutique floor in Manila to the yo-yo stages of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, Ernest Kahn’s journey is a testament to the power of mastery, passion, and a little serendipity. Sometimes, the stars align in ways no one could ever imagine and when they do, they can even open the doors of Louis Vuitton.

Interestingly enough, yoyo demonstrations like Ernest’s do have a historical context with Louis Vuitton. In the 1920s when the Yo-yo was first introduced in France, exhibitions of this new toy were done in the store window of the Champs Elysees store in Paris.

It's not every day that you see yo-yo mastery at a Vuitton store, or that a Vuitton sales associate gets to meet the CEO of the company. Clearly, it was Kahn's lucky day--Yves was so impressed with the exhibition that he even asked for a picture with him and promised to have a custom Louis Vuitton Yo-yo in the famous damier graphite print made just for him and this is it.
