Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about booking yo-yo lessons or a performance with Ernest Kahn — National Yo-Yo Champion and Bay Area entertainer.
Lessons & Coaching
What age can kids start yo-yo lessons? Ernest teaches students as young as 5 years old. As long as a child can hold a yo-yo and follow simple instructions, they're ready to start. Ernest works with kids, teens, and adults at every level — there's no age limit on learning something new.
Do I need to bring my own yo-yo? Not for your first lesson. Ernest will have equipment available to get you started. If you decide to continue, he'll recommend the right yo-yo for your skill level and goals — and help you avoid wasting money on the wrong gear.
How long until my child can do cool tricks? Most students land their first impressive trick within the first or second lesson. Progress depends on practice between sessions, but yo-yo has a fast and visible learning curve — which is a big part of why kids love it. Ernest builds each lesson plan to keep momentum going.
Do you teach adults or just kids? Ernest teaches all ages, all year round. Adults are welcome and actually progress quickly because of their focus and coordination. Whether you're picking it up for fun, fitness, or competition, lessons are tailored to where you are and where you want to go.
I've never touched a yo-yo before. Is that okay? Absolutely. Beginners are Ernest's specialty. The intro lesson is specifically designed for students starting from zero — no experience, no equipment, no problem.
Are yo-yo lessons good for kids with ADHD or who struggle to focus?
Yes — and this comes up a lot. Yo-yo is a hands-on, immediately rewarding activity that tends to hold attention in a way that traditional sports or classroom learning sometimes doesn't. The combination of physical movement, music, and visible progress keeps kids engaged. Many parents have found it to be one of the first activities their child truly sticks with.
Can we do a trial lesson before committing to a package?
Yes. The intro lesson is a standalone 45-minute private session for $120 — no package commitment required. It's a great way to experience the coaching style, see how your child responds, and decide if private lessons are the right fit before investing in a pack.
What happens in a first lesson? Ernest starts by getting to know your goals and current skill level. From there you jump straight into hands-on learning — no lectures, no fluff. You'll leave with real skills and a clear practice plan so you can keep building between sessions.
Scheduling & Location
Where do lessons take place?
In-person lessons are available in San Francisco and Berkeley. Ernest also travels to student locations throughout the East Bay depending on distance — reach out to confirm availability for your area. Cities served include Oakland, Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond, Walnut Creek, and surrounding communities.
Do you offer virtual lessons?
Yes. Virtual lessons are available to students anywhere in the world via video call. All virtual sessions are 30 minutes. They work great for students who want consistent coaching but can't meet in person, or for students outside the Bay Area.
How do virtual lessons actually work?
Ernest uses a video platform where you can both see each other clearly. He'll coach you in real time, demonstrate tricks on camera, and give you feedback on your technique. All you need is a yo-yo, a little space, and a device with a camera.
How often should my child take lessons?
Once a week is the sweet spot for most students building real momentum. Twice a week works well for students preparing for a performance or competition. Ernest will give you an honest recommendation based on your goals after the first session.
Do you teach on weekends and after school hours?
Yes. Ernest offers flexible scheduling including after-school hours, evenings, and weekends to work around school and family schedules.
Do you teach year-round?
Yes, lessons are available all year, including school breaks and summer. Summer is actually a great time to accelerate progress since students have more time to practice between sessions.
Do you do Autographed cards?
Yes, depending on the event and or lesson booked! Upon request.
